Log first, upload later.

Post by scanderick »

Hi there,

I would like to suggest a new function for this apps. Why not allow the apps to first log (maybe save the logfile to somewhere in the Memory card) and that when there wifi/internet, the apps will immediately upload the coordinates logged earlier into the server and update the website. :D

You mean you don't want to send data even if the data connection is working? Why you don't want to send the data?

No, that is not what I mean. Sometime for example, user might travel to a nearby country for about a day or 2. So it might not be a good idea to purchase a prepaid data card just for that 1 or 2 days (or sometime there might not have such package). However If a user do not wish to use his/her data roaming at oversea (as that might incur more cost), he/she might temporary disable the data connection when in the other country. But he/she may still wish to log down the overall travel detail and display it later in the web when one can access to the WiFi maybe in a cafe or hotel later...

This is just a scenario I can predict... it might be useful for those who wish to log the detail but do not have access to data connection (which might sometime be the case of low/no network).

This is exactly what the tracker does already now. If data connection is not working the tracker will buffer all track points until connection is available. Of course there is a maximum limit for the buffer. Please also keep following in mind: The server deletes track data periodically (e.g. except the most recent data). So if your tracker sends 5000 track points after your trip most of them will be deleted when the clean job is running. User having the "Track Loading" can save their tracks for a longer period.

But it could be useful to decrease roaming costs, if you could make a differnce between gps interval and mobile connection control. So you can create accurate trackings, but submit them just, for example, once every 2 hours.
kind regards

If your data connection is disabled and you enable it temporarily every two hours the tracker will send all track data as a batch. What do you think? Is it a too complicated solution?
